Mobile Suit Gundam: Federation vs. Zeon & DX Is Back Online!

This day is one for the history books! For the first time ever, a Japanese-exclusive online Dreamcast game has been revived and is once again playable online! The game is Mobile Suit Gundam: Federation vs. Zeon and this is all thanks to a guy named Inada-s who reverse-engineered the server for both the Dreamcast and PS2 versions of the game. The Dreamcast version is of course the one we’re excited about. Originally the server was built for use with an emulator but our resident server wizard Shuouma took it upon himself to adapt it for use on real hardware. Shu and I have done a few tests and it’s been working great. Not only does the game run very smoothly, at least with two players anyway, but it’s also a really fun game. I think it will end up being a big hit in the Dreamcast online community. I should warn you that the game is very, very Japanese so it will take some practice to navigate the menus if you aren’t fluent in the language. Fear not though, as a screenshot-based walkthrough is available in the Connection Guide. As usual, be sure to check that out if you want to try this out for yourself.

A big thanks and shout-out goes to Inada-s for his work getting this playable online again and of course to Shu for getting it working on actual Dreamcast hardware. Hopefully this will be just the start and we’ll see more Japan-exclusives revived in the future! I have no doubt we’ll be playing Capcom Mahjong with voice chat in no time!

As usual, this is a work-in-progress server so if you have any issues, you can report them on the Dreamcast-Talk thread here.

Just a quick note, Federation vs. Zeon and Federation vs. Zeon DX are two separate games. It’s very much like a Phantasy Star Online v1 / v2 situation though where DX (or Deluxe) is the same game but with added content (specifically more maps and mechs).
