Top 5 Online Dreamcast Games (2018 Edition)

This past year has been another great one for the Dreamcast online community. Not only do we have more and more players every day connecting their Dreamcasts to the internet but we’ve also had an increase in the number of games we can play online thanks to Shuouma. We now have a total of 14 games that can be played online with hopefully even more to come in the near future. So of these 14 games, which ones are the best? The cream of the crop if you will. Well we’re about to find out. The people have spoken with over 160 votes in this year’s poll. Here are your top 5 online Dreamcast games!

5. ChuChu Rocket!

Taking number 5 spot is ChuChu Rocket!. While demoted from last year’s 3rd place, it’s still undeniably one of the best online Dreamcast games out there. The pure craziness that is ChuChu Rocket! manages to take a simple concept and transform it into a panic-inducing party game that’s sure to appeal to just about anyone. Heck, you don’t even need to be good at the game to enjoy it as ChuChu Rocket! is one of the only games in existence that you can win without even touching the controller. Although if you happen to be a pro at the game, try playing it with the Pop ‘n’ Music controller for an extra challenge.

4. Monaco Grand Prix Online

A newcomer to the list this year, Monaco Grand Prix Online has become surprisingly popular since it was brought back online in September of last year. I’ll be the first to admit that simulation racing games aren’t my cup of tea but this game is a blast. The sense of speed, the huge selection of tracks, and the fact that you can race with up to 5 other players makes this one a winner. Oddly enough, I’d wager that there are more people playing Monaco Online today than there were upon its initial release considering the fact that it was a PAL exclusive and released in limited numbers.

3. Alien Front Online

Taking the third place position this year is Alien Front Online. This game almost reclaimed its 2nd place position from last year, only to be knocked down a peg by a tie-breaker. AFO was a late release for the Dreamcast but still managed to become a very popular online game. This is due in no small part to the inclusion of voice chat which allowed you the ability to shout commands at teammates or hurl insults at enemies. Talk about being ahead of its time. Even some modern game consoles struggle with integrating seamless voice chat *coug* Nintendo Switch *cough*.

2. Quake III Arena

Moving up two places from its 4th place position last year, Quake III Arena takes the 2nd place spot. The game was brought to the Dreamcast by Sega to showcase the online capabilities of the Dreamcast so it’s no surprise that it garnered a massive fanbase over the years. The fast-paced arena shooter action provided by Quake is still something that’s craved by many gamers. With the FPS market flooded by military shooters these days, going back to the simple run-and-gun action of Quake III can be a breath of fresh air.

1. Phantasy Star Online

I bet you didn’t see this one coming. Ok, yeah, you could probably see this one coming all the way from Ragol. Phantasy Star Online has once again taken the title of your favorite online Dreamcast game. You’d be hard pressed to find a single hour of the day when the Phantasy Star Online ships are void of any players. The world’s first console MMO continues to maintain its massive following with players from all over the world getting together to save Ragol from Dark Falz…. over and over and over again. You’d think someone would have figured out by now that that planet is a lost cause. Ah well, heroes will be heroes.

Before I end this article, I just wanted to give a quick honorable mention to POD SpeedZone which almost made the 5th place spot. The smooth 60fps sci-fi racing action of POD isn’t something you should pass up. I highly recommend giving it a shot, especially if you’re a fan of arcade racers.

But anyway, there you have it! Another year, another list of our favorite online Dreamcast games. Do you agree with this list? What would your personal top 5 be? Let me know in the comments below. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go save Ragol from Dark Falz… for the thousandth time.
