Shuouma has finally cracked the last piece of the puzzle when it comes to the Visual Concepts games! As many of you are aware, setting your username in the 2K sports games, Ooga Booga, and Internet Game Pack has always required a workaround, assigning you a random username upon logging in for the first time and then requiring you to go to a webpage to set your desired name. This username was also linked to your IP address, so if it changed, you would need to set your username again. This “duct tape” workaround was originally implemented because the login system used a form of Blowfish encryption which was not easily bypassed. Rather than spend a large amount of time trying to crack the encryption, Shu decided to work around it instead, allowing us to play the game right away without having to wait. I’m happy to announce that starting today, these extra steps are no longer required, and you can now set your username in the game, just as you could back in 2001! It’s a small thing but just streamlines the process a bit more and removes a bit of hassle in the event of an IP change.
Just a few things to note:
- If you’ve already played any of the Visual Concepts games before, you can just log in like normal, but keep in mind that the first time you log in after this update, your password will be set permanently. So make sure you remember the password that you type in.
- The username and password you set will be universal across all of the VC games.
- If you’ve never played the any VC games, you’ll need to create an account first. Just say “no” when asked if you already have a screen name.
It’s been almost 7 years now since Shuouma reversed the servers for the Visual Concepts games so it’s awesome to see his dedication to making them 100%, even though he really doesn’t have to. A huge thanks to him for all his amazing contributions to the community, both big and small!
Does NFL 2K1 still work? It would not connect to the server and the connection guide only mentioned 2K2 games…
Yes, the 2K1 games were down. Should be back up now.
Nice work guys! 😉
